PAE and St Andrews’ University offer a Refresher Course for Journalists in the province of Chubut and Santa Cruz
The training course will also be offered in the city of Trelew during the second part of 2016

Within the framework of the Comprehensive Program to Support Education promoted by Pan American Energy (PAE) in the region, the company and St Andrews’ University (UdeSA) will offer a Refresher Course for journalists and social communicators.  The course will be delivered in Comodoro Rivadavia by leading professionals.

This four-module training course seeks to provide journalists with the tools they need to face the challenges posed by the new platforms, plan their tasks taking into account these new contexts, produce news that cater to different audiences, and develop a more critical approach to their job.

On March 18 and 19, Dr. Silvia Ramirez Gelbes, Ph.D in Linguistics and Director of the Master’s Program in Journalism at UdeSA, delivered the first module, called Online Writing for Journalism: from paper to screen. Dr. Ramirez Gelbes explained that “digital journalism poses a completely different challenge for today’s professionals, one that arises from recognizing the way in which users read today. The course seeks to offer participants a more encompassing perspective of online writing together with the tools to produce news in the current context of up-to-the-minute information.”

Focusing on the proposal’s general contents, Dr. Ramirez Gelbes highlighted that “in a globalized world dominated by information, it is necessary for journalists to become better professionals, to be professionals that can not only find and share relevant content but who can, above all, produce these contents in different ways, for different media and for different platforms. Professional journalists today need updated theory that can be applied to their professional practice and that enables them to work effectively in this world and under these new conditions. This course aims to meet this demand.”

Gastón Malbos, Head of Institutional Relations at PAE, noted “it is highly satisfactory for PAE to offer these quality training proposals for the professionals in the region. We are very pleased with how well the first module was accepted. The response from the journalists clearly shows that there is a real need for training, and we will continue working along these lines to satisfy such need.”

The next modules will cover the following topics:

Management of Digital News-Producing Companies (May 6 and 7)
Journalism in Social Networks (July 24 and 25)
Online Audiences (August 5 and 6)

With these innovative learning opportunities, PAE seeks to reinforce its commitment to the Golfo San Jorge region.
