Green Military Macaw project

The Green Military Macaw (Ara Militaris) is a native bird to the rainforest hills in Tartagal, in the northwest corner of the province of Salta, which is the only current known habitat for this species. Over the last 10 years, its population has not grown because its habitat is being destroyed and the bird is being hunted by local residents.

To know more about this magnificent bird, we developed a project with Aves Argentinas (Birdlife in Argentina) to conduct a baseline study and determine the necessary measures for the bird’s preservation, while conducting an awareness-raising campaign.

  • In 2015, a team of professionals was set up to conduct a census and to study the conditions of both wild and captive populations. The team focused on a family of 50 specimens at Quebrada del Arroyo El Limón.
  • PAE conducted a publicity campaign to raise awareness about the species and its importance as a part of the Tartagal hills preservation effort. In 2015 and 2016, educational workshops were organized in schools located in Acambuco, Chorrito, Piquirenda, Campo Largo and Bajo Macueta.
